ASAP Awards Celebration Honors Innovation Competition Winners!

On June 13, 2012 the Active Schools Acceleration Project (ASAP), an initiative of ChildObesity180, honored teachers, students, and schools for their innovative work toward increasing children’s physical activity. The 2012 ASAP Awards Celebration marked the culmination of ASAP’s nationwide Innovation Competition designed to identify and reward the most creative, impactful, and scalable school-based programs and technologies that promote quality physical activity for children. Launched in February 2012, the competition received over 500 entries from schools, districts, and technology developers from all 50 states sharing their solutions to get kids moving in school. Eleven competition winners were named in two categories: nine “School Programs” and two “Technology Innovations”. Full details about the competition’s design and winners’ profiles may be found at www.ActiveSchoolsASAP.org.

Over 250 honorees, collaborators, and supporters gathered at Washington, DC’s Woolly Mammoth Theatre for the celebration. Several notable individuals participated as speakers and presenters including:

Bonnie Bernstein, ESPN
Sam Kass, Let’s Move
Jason Mayden, Nike
Aneesh Chopra, The Advisory Board Company
Shellie Pfohl, President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, & Nutrition

The afternoon’s keynote address was delivered by Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, New Jersey.

Staying true to ASAP’s tenets, the event was not without a little activity to get the blood pumping. Midway through the ceremony the entire audience rose to their feet for an activity break complete with squats, star jumps, and “wacky jacks”.
